Chapter 8

Iben took a deep breath and wiped the tears from his eyes. He knew there was no way to hide the fact that he had been crying, but under the circumstances, he knew that Djal wouldn’t say anything.

Once he felt he was sufficiently composed, Iben turned to look at Djal. “What happened?”

“There’s been an attack.”

Iben swallowed hard, knowing that Zack could hear every word he spoke. “Where?”

“The far side of the village by the old mill house.”

“Was anyone hurt?”

“There are a few pack members with minor injuries, nothing serious, but Julian is missing.”

“Did anyone recognize the attackers? Was it Frank?”

“I don’t know. I came to tell you as soon as word reached me.”

Iben nodded.

“We suspect that Julian is being held just west of the village. Someone saw Julian being carried off into the forest by several men. I’m assuming they were shifters, but I can’t be positive.”

“How many men?”

“At least ten, Iben.”

Iben nodded again, a plan already forming in his mind. His first priority was seeing to the safety of his pack, and that included Julian, who he had promised wouldn’t be hurt again. It looked like Iben’s promise to Zack wasn’t the only one he was breaking.

“Take some men and round up the rest of the pack. I want them brought here for their own safety. Zack can assist you in keeping everyone calm.”

“Sissy and Rory are here,” Djal said quickly. “They can help with rounding everyone up. Let me go with you. You’re going to need my help.”

“No. Your duty is to the pack. You need to make sure everyone is safe. I’ll deal with whoever took Julian. You just protect the pack.” Even as Iben spoke, his eyes slid past Djal to land on Zack. His heart ached so much that Iben was afraid it was just going to give out on him. No one could live with this level of pain, not for long anyway.

“You’ll take care of him?” Iben whispered as he ate up Zack’s beautiful features with his eyes. “Make sure that he’s happy?”

“Iben—”

“Please, Djal.” Iben turned his eyes back to his best friend, begging him silently.

Djal’s shoulders slumped as he nodded. “He won’t want for anything.”

“Protect him.”

“With my life, Iben.”

Iben knew he was placing Zack into Djal’s care. He also knew that Djal would do exactly as he promised. He would protect Zack with his life. No harm would ever come to Zack, and Djal would make sure that the man was happy wherever he ended up, or with whomever he ended up with.

Iben also knew he was saying good-bye to his best friend. He reached out and settled his hand on Djal’s slumped shoulder. “I’m sorry, my friend. I wish things could have been different.”

“Me, too.” Djal had tears in his eyes as he looked down at him.

“Give my love to Sissy and Robby, and don’t…don’t let them hate Zack for this. It isn’t his fault. It’s mine. I tried to take something that didn’t belong to me, and now I’m paying the price.
